The National Health Laboratory (Laboratoire national de santé – LNS) officially inaugurated its CT scanner on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, within its Department of Legal Medicine, in the presence of Ms Martine Deprez, Minister of Health and Social Security, and Ms Elisabeth Margue, Minister of Justice.

This state-of-the-art device enables comprehensive and systematic documentation of deceased individuals prior to autopsy, directly within the LNS. The 3D reconstructions it generates facilitate examination planning and enhance the forensic accuracy of findings, particularly in cases where autopsy assessments are complicated by the condition of the body.

The event concluded with a technical presentation and live demonstration of the scanner, offering guests an insight into its advanced capabilities and its integration into the LNS’s forensic workflows.

“On behalf of the Board of Directors of the LNS, I would like to express our deepest gratitude to the Haut-Commissariat à la protection nationale (HCPN) and the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (CHL) for their valuable support. Thanks to their generosity, this scanner now finds a new purpose in serving science and justice, by strengthening the forensic expertise capabilities of our institution.” – Dr. Guy Berchem, President of the Board of Directors of the LNS.

“With this state-of-the-art equipment, our Department strengthens its international standing in post-mortem imaging,” said Priv.-Doz. Dr Thorsten Schwark, Head of the LNS Department of Legal Medicine.
