Job description

About the National Center of Genetics

The National Center of Genetics (NCG) at the LNS covers all areas of human genetics, including clinical genetics, genetic counseling, and a wide range of genetic diagnostics, from conventional karyotyping to modern next-generation sequencing (NGS) techniques, in both prenatal and postnatal settings.

The NCG provides genetic consultations and diagnostic services to patients and their families, for example in cases of familial cancer predisposition, rare inherited diseases, as well as prenatal genetics and family planning. In addition, we continuously develop new techniques and expand our diagnostic portfolio to ensure that patients receive state-of-the-art care.

The National Center of Genetics comprises three Services:

  • Department of Clinical Genetics
  • Department of Cytogenetics & Hemato-Oncogenetics
  • Department of Molecular Genetics

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participating in the daily management of the laboratory;
  • Participating in a regular rotation between the hematooncogenetics and constitutional cytogenetics activities within the Hematooncogenetics and Cytogenetics Unit;
  • Performing genetic diagnostics, interpretation and reporting in constitutional cytogenetics (pre- und postnatal);
  • Performing cytogenetic and molecular cytogenetic analyses, including metaphase evaluation, FISH and Bionano, and preparing comprehensive, integrated diagnostic reports for hematological malignancies by consolidating these findings with bone marrow morphology (myelogram), flow cytometry, molecular genetics, and other relevant laboratory and clinical results;
  • Participate in the development of research projects and applying scientific knowledge in expanding the diagnostic and research portfolio of the NCG;
  • Seek funding from national (FNR) and international funding bodies including writing scientific proposals;
  • Optimizing existing methods and developing new ones;
  • Planning, interpretation and reporting of molecular genetic examinations;
  • Participation in the development and maintenance of a quality system based on (ISO 15189);
  • Participating in external quality control trials;
  • Training and supervision of the technicians;
  • Participating to clinical staff meeting at National Center of Genetics and in other multidisciplinary meeting;
  • Communicate cytogenetic findings to referring physicians when appropriate;
  • Keep up to date with the latest scientific, technological, and clinical developments in constitutional and hemato-oncology cytogenetics.

PROFILE

  • PhD/Master sciences in Genetics or other similar qualification in clinical genetics;
  • Several years of experience in a diagnostic cytogenetics laboratory, including independent interpretation and reporting in both constitutional cytogenetics (pre- and postnatal) and cancer cytogenetics/hematological neoplasia, as well as experience in preparing integrated hemato-oncology reports combining cytogenetic, morphological, immunophenotypic, molecular, and relevant clinical findings, is mandatory;
  • Knowledge of specific chromosomal aberrations in leukemia and their detection also on preparations with metaphases that are very difficult to analyze;
  • Application of different methods of in situ hybridization (interphase nucleus diagnostics, metaphase analysis with directly labeled probes);
  • Experience in the interpretation of Bionano datasets would be desirable;
  • Willingness to take on responsibility;
  • Ability to work in a team, resilience, flexibility, ability to work under pressure and high commitment characterize you;
  • You have a strong interest in genetic/medical issues and an exceptionally high level of motivation;
  • Willingness to establish new methods for diagnostic application;
  • Experience in quality management (ISO15189) is an advantage;
  • Good knowledge of MS-Office, especially Excel. Experience with Laboratory Information and Management Systems (LIMS) and bioinformatics tools is appreciated;
  • Advanced English knowledge in spoken and written is required; knowledge of German is an advantage.
